Any tips to get my light higher. Can't seem to find much good gear

Are you raiding yet or what is your current light ?

depends on your current light.

new KF raid, i say 285+ light to even attempt. (with a decent team) if not you need 295 plus so you can hold your own.

if your below 285, i suggest using 3 of coins and gettin some exotics here and there while doing Strikes. doing Heroic stikes actually get you gear pretty fast. and you can get decent gear drops.

you could play pvp if thats your thing but good luck. and if your above 290+ light then go to trails and get the trails gear. it will drop 300-320

dont forget to do your night falls. your rewards again will be based on light level though.

When decrypting engrams make your light high as possible. Decrypt one at a time. If it's higher than your current piece put it on. Do this every time. You can switch to your better gear afterwards.

I am not raiding. I have no team. My current light is only 195 on one and 189 on another

195... Have you even hit level 40? Play through the story. Then do the highest level strikes you can with 3 of coins active. Do the dailies and NFs once you are strong enough

I am lvl 40 i havent played much of the story. So I guess that is my next step

Once you finish the story missions, you should be 250+ light. Then start farming some strike playlist you will be 280-290 in no time
