Just got Destiny and am around level 11. But I'm always behind in levels what they think I should be. Is this common or am I just missing doing somethings?

Are you doing bounties?

Yes its normal. You need to do bounties. They give you alot of xp (2500-5000) and are very easy to do (most of em). Just do your bounties, and when you have the level recommended for a mission, do it. Dont bother doing the missions on hard for more exp, its not worth it.

Also the side missions that aren't direct story progression help immensely. Do all the missions on a given planet before moving on to the next. I also did each of the strikes when I was over leveled for them. Like level 10 for sexy prime on earth etc
