Apparently this happens and I was unaware.
It seems as if that "hard" auto save right at the beginning gets overwritten any time you start a new character. If you have continued to save your character in that slot and then decide to start a new character, your old character will be overwritten unless you save to a different slot. Always make multiple saves to avoid this issue.
Bye bye level 44 mage.
This has happened since the dawn of auto saves... The only way you could have lost your Mage is if you never created his own saved game aside from the auto saves... or you saved over top your non auto saved game.
My Save/ Load list look like this:
(New Save)

Creates a new save slot that is manually controlled
Auto Save\
Auto Save }

Rotating auto saves every 15 mins ( or every time a new area is entered )
Auto Save/
91 Skyrim

lvl 40 Warrior
87 Skyrim

lvl 40 Warrior ( same as above )
71 Skyrim

My Imperial lvl 1
When I first saved my imperial, it was instinctive to select (New Save)...
either way, sorry about your loss.
