Think of Blood Gems basically as runes from D2. You socket them into weapons and they add effects. They are not perm though, you can take them out at anytime.

I beat The One Reborn and made it to the second lamp (1st floor) in Lecture Building. Without any major spoilers, how far through the game am I?

/edit: Trophy wise I'm at 22 %, but I mean in terms of finishing the 1st playthrough.

Really contemplating getting Bloodborne.
Not having played ANY of the previous Souls-games, not sure how I'll react.

I don't think the game being difficult is a problem, I just don't know HOW difficult the game is.

PS: I've lived through (and completed) Super Kaizo World (a super-nintendo rom-hack game made by a sadistic japanese man)
