Then I got the perk that causes all double-cast spells to stagger opponents.

lol i think you should try playing a bit further with mage before switching, i think it'll still be fun in the long run. i don't know for sure though, i just got the perk as well. definitely crazy for few or one enemy, but it makes more sense to have it when you fight hard hitting enemies or large groups while not using conjuration or companions

or you could try loading an early save and try it without the perk at all lol
