I am finding the open world a liitle confusing on where to go next.

This is what I have done so far. Where is my next objective?

Undead Burg
Undead Parish
The Depths
Blighttown
And I just beat the Chaos Witch in Quelaag's Domain.

yea back where the blacksmith is in the parish, there is a path leading out from the bonfire.

some alternatives would be to go into the area below that blacksmith, kill the demon down there, and head into the forest. thats more like a side area you can do anytime though, and can be rather difficult. but you can do it!

One more question. I know the Quelaags Furysword scales on dex but do you think it would still out damage a Drakes sword on my character that has been pumping str?
It has an E rating for it str scaling.

depends.. quelaags also scales with your humanity up to +10 humanity.. you can also +5 it. eventually, you will find drakes sword just isnt working as well later. anytime you change it will kinda suck at first cause all weapons swing a little differently.

i have a 50 str build and i use dragon greatsword and black knights sword primarily

Drakes sword gets no scaling from anything what so ever... so quelaags in in the long run will be better

pumping strength wont hel pmuch

i wouldnt say go over 35
i havnt found anything great to use that rews high str except the dragon weps but there so fuckin slow there not even worth using

i disagree. havels shield is amazing. so is the dragon sword. its slow but i one shot mobs. just gotta get used to using it. the other day i killed an invader with an overhead slam (one handed) which pinned him to the floor. while he was getting up i switched to two handed and used the swords shockwave to kill him.

the big weapons have advantages too.

i thought about getting 34 str just to use greatshield of artorious or havels shield, havels set is supposedly the best at the moement (if you have the end to carry it and still keep weight under 50%)
but i'm still using gold hemmed set with crest shield and grass crest shield switches and using +5 lightning laito.
i use quellags vs other enemies when i'm bored and sometimes gravelords or black knight sword (though i find those two a bit slower so i rarely use them)

but scaling at the moment is kind of broken and a lot of people just end up using elemental attacks

is there a way to trade?
