are clothes a necessity?

by your logic, not owning any is simply an inconvenience.

I would freeze to death without clothes. I would also be breaking the law. I could also have damage done to parts of my body that could lead to harm or death.

If you want to break it down to the bare minimum there are only three things that are a necessity, but that isn't the point and you are distracting away from it. The point is you do not need a phone and that was the original question.

no you wouldn't - you could choose to live in a nudist commune, or more directly to your situation - simply never leave your apartment.

most if not all "damage" that you're talking about would also occur with your tshirt and jeans on. perhaps minor scratches and clothes could lessen the severity of a burn..

now, as for the rest - you're trying to define "necessity goods" and then you're breaking your own definition. simply put, necessities are items that we will pay for no matter the cost - food, water, electricity, gasoline.

gasoline may not be a "necessity" to you or to people who don't have a car - but it actually is. if you use public transport... chances are your mode of transportation is fueled by gas.

now that we've established generally accepted "necessities" we can move on to what are deemed modern necessities - phones, internet, computers.

the true economic definition of a necessity is simply something that has a low price elasticity (of demand) - meaning people buy it no matter what. these items are essential to your functional life. when you're budgeting, these items are the last to get crossed off your list or the first to be added. obviously there's a bit of give here because some things will be necessary to a specific instance and not remotely necessary to others - ie. carpenters and lawyers have different professional necessities.

some form of verbal communication is generally essential - i can honestly say that i couldn't tell you where to go to use a working payphone.

tl;dr - you're trying to individualize a communal definition, mostly because i think you're just trying to be perverse.

You're right. If you want to function like the average normal majority; a phone is a necessity to fit into that category. But going a week or two without wont destroy the foundations of your life to the point of utter collapse (more importantly his life). Maybe necessity wasn't a good word to use to begin with. Maybe priority of wants/needs would have been better, but Lets not forgot my original post that started this.

Lets see... I could spend the remainder of my money on the one thing left in life that I enjoy and keeps me on the outside edge of insanity or I could buy a not-so-necessary "necessity" and sulk for until I get more money.

It's probably your carrier boss. Phones itself shouldn't really make a huge difference

Just from my experience though.
