You will want to upgrade it anyway if you are planning to use it for an extended amount of time. I took the cleric beast down with my Saw Cleaver +1, but upgrading isn't a necessity.

The spiders that rom summons are on the map already, just hidden. You can run around and make them reveal themselves, killing them before you tackle rom makes the fight much easier.
