Why can't they know how many have been actually sold to customers?

Actually, no. Sold to customers means consoles actually bought, while shipped to retailers mean how much stores stocked up. Most likely, Microsoft doesn't want to report some retailers are having trouble selling their inventory.

are there any problems with the first release ps4?

im kinda waiting for them to iron out any issues and i'll get the 2nd version
