Things are "given" to me because I qualify for them. You may joke about it and insult me over it, but I'm not walking up to people and taking their money. Millions of people apply for SSI. Nearly 1/2 are turned down on the spot and a large majority are put on a review/waiting list that can literally last a decade.

It allows people who need help to get help. That's like saying insurance is just for people too lazy to become doctors.
