Don't worry about it till you hit 20

For now play the game and have fun. Do all the bounties you can and level up your vanguard level. Vanguard for you will matter through Ikora Rey, the warlock vendor. You level her up by doing patrols and bounties which will be introduced to you in the coming levels. Do them all and often. You want at least level 3.

When you get higher strikes will be unlocked. These can net experience gear and vanguard reputation. Do them!

At this point in the game if a piece of gear is higher defense or damage use it. Scrap your old stuff. Don't pay attention to stats like strength and such.

Don't worry about light level - that is how you get past the level 20 soft cap. Don't worry about anything right now. Just enjoy the game, there really is no way to mess up in this game while leveling. Use guns you like. I prefer sunsinger to voidwalker, but it is completely up to you. Like someone earlier said, sunsinger is better for the raid, but you have some ways to go

Not to mention all the people trying to log in for the first time and everyone else. Ddos is only the start. When you try to log on like 12 times because of a ddos you're also contributing. Multiple you by the population of destiny and it's like a second wave of ddos. Let it sort itself out and try again tomorrow
