4k isn't the direction, it's the current standard.
1080p tvs are being phased out. Samsung has already stopped making them as far as i can tell.
Just because content isn't there yet, doesn't mean you can't "futureproof."
If you're in the market to buy a brand new tv, there is no logical argument saying that you should buy a 1080 over 4k, unless you're REALLY skimping on money.
4k has been available for several years now, and prices dropped significantly a couple years ago. Now tvs are priced more affordable then they were years ago, and years ago, 1080p was the norm.
