shut it down, keep monitor on, make sure its on its HD mode, press and hold the power button on the ps3 till it double beeps then release

I had the same problem with the borders, it happened when i was using my ps3 with the av outputs got a new tv a few years ago and connected with HDMI but it looked like shit still with the borders. I did this trick and it fixed it also gave me the option of 1080p etc. etc. fixed it and havnt had a problem since.

here gimmie a few ill go figure out where to go to change it
you can thank 4 game of thrones episodes leakes for season 5 which starts ep 1 on the 12th  + ps4 lack of usb video player :(
2nd last icon to the left "settings"
go down near the bottom to " display settings"
its the very top "video output setting" if its not 720p 1080i 1080p ect ect change it

the 3 button beep just resets everything back to defaults it does the same thing because when you plug in an hdmi it asks if it wants you to convert to that you click yes and its done
or just do it manually and not potentially do 10 other things the button beeps do
