It kinda is. My nephew sometimes talks to me about games, and I ask him I know you didn't play it how do you know so much about the game and his response is that he watched an entire lets play on youtube. What the hell was the point. All the story, but none of the enjoyment of playing the game?

In this case it is even more weird since he actually wants to join the session just to watch. Why not go to twitch or youtube.
