You have fucking idiots if you ever took a plasma over a led del technology.

Here some of the reasons why you should NEVER pick a plasma TV.

Energy Efficiency:
Plasma TVs are less energy efficient than LED-lit LCD TVs. According to Which magazine, a 42 inch screen LED-lit LCD TV will use an average of 64 watts, while an average 42 inch Plasma TV uses 195 watts.

Reliability:
HDTVs are generally highly reliable. LED-lit LCD TVs are considered to have a lifespan of 100,000 hours, although they have not been in use long enough to have extensive information on their long-term reliability.
According to PC World, users of Panasonic’s plasma TVs rate them highly reliable, with very few serious problems. In 2010, just 1 in 20 Panasonic users reported a major problem with their TVs. Older plasma TVs have a lifespan of 20,000 hours, although some newer TVs have up to 60,000 hours.

I haven't heard something so ignorant in a long time. Well-played.

OP, only two reasons I'd consider not getting a plasma is image retention and input lag (depending on the model). If you don't care about that, plasma is the obvious choice. I own a Panny 50g20 and a 60vt60. I game on the 50g20 because i don't care about IR, but both allow for excellent gaming experiences.

^ no, plasmas are way better now... a high end plasma vs. a high end LED, the plasma is better in literally every single way except for the lighting situation if your room is too bright. And if you worry about paying 2 dollars extra for your electric bill each month, if that, I guess.

I guess if you played 12 hours/day you might hit that.

plasma better for movies
plasma is better for gaming

Fixed. Plasmas usually have lower input lag, and higher motion resolution than LED, making it handle things in motion a lot better.

Plus, the deeper black levels, higher contrast and superior colour accuracy of plasma lets you "graphics whore" to its fullest. Graphics are only as good as the hardware they're running on and the display that is displaying them.

Get a led bro. They look gorgeous.

Imo: 1080, 120hz, led TV and you choose what size is best for you

Unless you are talking about the design of the TV itself, plasma will produce images that look even more gorgeous ;)

I believe the newer plasmas are less power hungry but of course use more than LED's
I'm just trying to find a deeper explaination as to why some suggest that LED is better than Plasma before I go and spend $3k

There is no explanation to it. Market hype. Manufacturers make a lot more profit seilling LEDs than they do selling plasmas, plus, the entire market is convinced that LED is a brand new technology, when in fact in most cases it is actually inferior to regular CCFL-based LCD. Point is it is still an LCD, but consumers think it is something new.

They are also slimmer, people want slim TVs. People also think, the fatter a TV is, the worse its picture quality must be (because of CRT days) when it is actually the opposite that is true. (its like comparing a slim notebook vs a chunky gaming laptop.. more space = more place to put the "power".)

Then there's the burn-in stigma which was prominent in the early days of plasma (2002-2008) but for the most part burn-in died out 6 years ago. Image Retention (sort of like burn-in but comes and goes) is still here, but even that is seldom compared to back in the day. Loads of people use plasma's on games with HUD or as a computer monitor with out getting any IR or burn-in.

... Then there's one more problem. Plasma's have inferior brightness compared to LCD/LEDs, but they have more than enough for any living room and especially in a dark room (which is the best way to play games and watch movies anyway) but consumers don't get to bring test-TVs into their home, they have to go to a store to look at TVs. (remember, stores get more $$ per LED TV they sell than per plasma) and in an electronics store the room is full of artificial light, like a laboratory -- not a good representative of the actual ambient light of your home. Here plasma's look rather dull, and all LED TVs are put in torch mode setting to look their brightest, basically the brightest TV wins as we are attracted to brightness like a moth is to a lamp.

/facepalm. There's nothing more ridiculous than people bitching about energy consumption. Do you guys live in some third world country where electricity is considered a holy privilege?

I just took a quick look around my house, its winter so I have the heater on in every single room in the house, so that's 8 ovens running 1500 watts... EACH.

1500 x 8 = 12,000 watts. RUNNING 24/7 for months on end

Then my gaming PC is 750 watts, running probably 8 hours/day, my AV receiver (600 watts) runs 8 hours/day and so does my 650 watt projector.

That's another ~ 1800 watts running 8-12 hours/day. Then there's the kettle, the food oven (which is 2000 watts or so and goes on for about 30 mins a day)

Then there's all the light in the house, which I never bother turning off, washing machine, etc..

So in other words, probably have 15,000 watts going on continuously throughout the day and my monthly electricity bill is a WHOPPING 400 dollars in the most expensive country in the world, where minimum wage is $3000/month.

And here you are bitching about 195 watts compared to 64 watts? Boohoo I could buy 20 plasma screens, leave them on 24/7 and at the end of the month I won't even notice a difference.

Now if plasmas consumed 20,000 watts, I would see it being a problem. My dad in Dubai has the same first world problem as me, but opposite. With him its the AC system. Air condition throughout the entire house = 25,000 watts and he pays about 500-600 dollars a month in dubai. 25K watts running 24/7 all summer to keep the house nice and cool. that's about 50 plasma screens running day and night.

Then there's this guy, with his 8.8 Snell THX Reference surround with 100,000 watts of amplifcation:

http://www.kipnis-studios.com/The_Kipnis_Studio_Standard/Kipnis_Home_Theaters.html

100K watts, and so much electricity consumption he needs his own generator, but he pays $1000/month for that BEHEMOTH of a sound system.

Still think your 200 watts is a deal breaker? (what is that, a DOLLAR a month? two dollars?
