Polygon is the worst review site I've ever seen. They gave it a 7.5 because he felt emotional during his playthrough? Never reading another polygon review good or bad

That's not really why the guy criticizes it. He says the game will try to make you care about a character but then it shifts to "mindless" shooting, before shifting back to character development. I think he means that the story can be good but it doesn't flow well with combat scenes. He doesn't seem to like the combat, or think it's that special. One of the big criticisms he seems to have is that the AI is bad and it breaks the atmosphere. Adam Sessler said the same thing in the review you posted. Naughty Dog never has been good at AI though.

his review was the first i read so i didnt go in with other peoples ideas in my mind but he failed to convey to me why it deserves a 7.5. if i read that without the score i wouldve said 9. he is failing to recognize the fact that the game isnt about a super soldier running through curb stomping zombies. a real life dude isnt going to have perfect stead aim on the run while being ambushed by zombies and jumping across rooftops while avoiding evil humans while trying to catch that one last helicopter.

He didn't like the combat (Loved the stealth though), thought the AI sucked, and he believed the frequent interruptions of cover based shoot 'em ups broke immersion. I don't really think he's attacking the fact it's hard, but that the combat doesn't work well for the story it portrays. Adam Sessler had many of the same criticisms, he just valued the story and stealth more than he valued the negatives.

Haven't seen or read anything about the AI being broken or flat out terrible
Few reviews have noted slight flaws in AI which is like any game, but that shouldn't warrant a 7.5/10
And to criticize Last of Us on poor character development... that's how you lose credibility as a game reviewer

A score of 7.5 does not mean mediocre or average. It's a good score. Also, almost every single review has said the AI is not the greatest. He said it's good character development but it's disrupted by poor combat scenes.

well that Polygon dude gave RE: Revelations HD version the same score, and I doubt The Last of Us is nearly as perfect as reviewers say but I'm having a hard time believing it's only on par with Revelations, which had god-awful story/characters/enemies, hardly any horror, and lackluster gameplay.

besides gameplay issues, his one big critique that stands out from other reviews is that the game simply celebrates violence and has no meaning by the second half. He's saying that all the brutal and violent killing felt unjustified after a while, and that it feels like it's just there for mindless entertainment and shock appeal rather than any meaningful message.
It could be a legit complaint, but I don't remember any other reviewers feeling that way so he may or may not be wrong.
