This sounds a lot like a conversation I had with my co-worker about people who read manga and watch anime. I told him I like to read DC, Marvel and american indie comics as well as some manga titles and he kind of scoffed at that. I asked him if he honestly believes Japan is the only place you can read a quality comic book? And it's the same question I would ask to someone who scoffed at the idea of reading manga.
There is a difference between reading manga / watching anime and going balls deep into everything Japan because of it.
