well for my interest in the culture it was sparked because of anime, as for JRPGs themselves they tend to have a very similar feeling to anime
as for sites like mal(site in my sig) it's a good thing it exists with just how much anime (and manga/light novels cause it tracks them too) there is out there it is a great way to keep track of where i am with a series or with multiple series (and the fact I have a program that keeps it updated as i watch stuff so i don't do any of the updating myself other than adding stuff i'm planning to watch)
I don't go through any great lengths to watch the latest stuff, i just check the seasonal chart and see what looks interesting and begin dling the episodes at some point, with the occassional older series I may pick up

but over here in Tennessee they dress mainly country with their super super short jean shorts (like their ass is popping out of them short) + some even wear country boots.

some of their country accents are kind of cute, but some they sound ratchet as hell

This sounds a lot like a conversation I had with my co-worker about people who read manga and watch anime. I told him I like to read DC, Marvel and american indie comics as well as some manga titles and he kind of scoffed at that. I asked him if he honestly believes Japan is the only place you can read a quality comic book? And it's the same question I would ask to someone who scoffed at the idea of reading manga.
