If people actually weren't close-minded about their views on anime it actually is really good (depends on the shows of course). Like douglas said.

I'm sure all those school romance anime and iwatchitfortheplot anime have great stories...

and in my case anime also led to my interest in the Japanese language/culture, possibly even my love of JRPGs, which are why I got my PS3, PSP, and Vita xD

Because unlike any other subject that people like they don't change their whole existence around it where as things even as far as other hobbies such as Warhammer people don't flock in mass to learn about the country and culture behind it. People who like all this new anime crap change everything about themselves and what they do to fit comfortably into the anime bubble; not to mention go to extreme lengths just to watch the "latest shows". There is no big boom of websites dedicated to how many House episodes you watched or Braking Bad episodes. People just watch it, talk about it, then move on.
