Because it feels like the majority of gamers play cut and paste games and couldn't really care for anything else, you said it yourself, they want to be "in the action". Everyone should try something before you start labeling something dull and boring.

Being in the action doesn't always mean cut and paste....how blind can you be?
I don't have much time to game these days. I work 7 days a week, steady long-term girlfriend and my dog. If I'm going to play a game, I want to be entertained. I've played games all my life, it doesn't make me any less of a gamer because I don't want to wander around environments completing absolutely nothing.
Journey has a very specific target audience that's not a majority....that's the realism behind it.
