There's a shortcut on each map and you don't need to hit every gate
As long as you don't miss more than 2 in a row you should be fine

I use a sparrow that breaks on corners when I hit r2 and can usually take the lead on turns if I'm not far behind

There are some people that are just way to good though lol

The shortcuts are slower than the regular track if you can take the corners well. Especially on the teleporter map if you can get that turn it is incredibly fast
