Later in the game you'll find a few items which enable Auto-Potion usage, but it won't help that much

Try R2 it opens up your item tab then use potions. Keep in mind a weird thing at first is if you use a potion after you get downed your health will only heal max to what of the grey part of your life is left not nessisarly Max health. You need to use an elixer or hi elixer to get back to max health if the grey part isn't full. You'll understand what I mean
