Just started this game a few days ago, having some problem lol

Finally beat story mode on medium after using a kinda cheap tactic on the final boss (Get far away every time he flinches tele and uppercut, rinse, repeat) and I've noticed overall my fights are pretty erratic, meaning one round I'll flawless then next round I'll get completely dominated (against NPC's ofc), my normal tactic is mostly to just bum rush with a special attack, if they block then uppercut, if they block again try for a throw or block depending on how they're acting... Should I be waiting for them to try to attack then counter? What are the common rules for countering? Thanks :)

e: This is the first MK game I've played since Sega Gensis (Played 1, 2, and 3) so yeah :S
