The clothing change really was not relevant to the battle system, they could have done the same thing without animations.

Your gripe doesn't seem to be with battle mechanics rather the animations(would you be fine with it if they changed weapons instead of clothing?)

I'm not trying to defend the system with this, just trying to make sure i'm clear about what exactly you hate about it, if its just the fact that theme is clothing change, its pretty easy to get past in my opinion,
kinda like playing the pokemon games. As RPG games they are solid as shit, they just have a very childish theme to them.
