not at all. it is a great story on its own. i never played one and two and only did part of 3. i read it has a lot of callbacks to previous games, and its easy to tell what they are. you should watch a primer on the story of the previous 3 before you play 4. if you plan to ever play 1,2,3, then don't do that and dont play 4 until you do.

i had tons of fun playing it. its one of those great games that you cant wait to jump back on and play some more of to get through the story. outside of that the multiplayer is OK and it has some good replay value because you can unlock bonuses (cheats) that make the game crazy after you beat it the first time.

Yeah, sleepy is right. It's not necessary but there are a lot of callbacks. Even some subtle ones that where for example, a certain mechanic is used just to throw back to Golden Abyss on Vita. You will appreciate it more but it's not necessary.
