Aside from Xbox one just implementing backwards compatibility, which console could you just use last gen games? None. So don't know why you expect it.

Early Ps3's and early 360's both had backward compatibility

Ps2 of course had the best backward compatibility for ps1.

Maybe they are. PS2 was a modern console for a modern gamer. Given its features, it was the prime entertainment offering of its era. Should people really expect regression from that point? I know it becomes a point of selfishness on the part of the consumer, but if it's given in spades then taken away entirely 2 generations later, you can expect people will be unhappy.
