I have a huge black border around every game i play when using a monitor

is there a fix for this?

I'm assuming HDMI? If not that's probably why you have the boxes....if not go into settings and change your video settings to 16:9

yeah through the xmb...without being in a game...just change the video settings to straight HDMI and make sure the screen size matches up with what your monitor handles IE: 16:9

i dont have an option to do that on my XMB :/

found where to do it but that option doesnt appear for me

u know the "black screen" might even be the ps3 restarting trying to fix your harddrive and then starting over
dont think the monitor or video settings are the cause

so i just tried my good monitor which is 16:9 stock and its still doing the black borders around the game.

edit: and this monitor has no option to change the aspect ratio or anything.
