Those things are piece of crap. Ask if you can to make it bridged. That way it runs strictly as a modem, then invest in a decent wireless router and you will see massive improvements.
I had to do something similar except I was able to bridge the gateway myself.

Just buy your own modem and router. Costs a bit in the short term but long term you end up saving a ton.

Sometimes ISPs are assholes and tell you what you have to have. If it's the option though I agree 100%.

Well I'm pretty sure I have to have this modem but if I buy my own wireless router can't I hook it up to it and run everything fine? This shits honestly ridciulous that I have to do all of this just to play my playstation online..

but they give us a modem with 4 wired slots and wifi so no issues really it eliminates the need for a router because it essentially is one lol

Not necessarily. If it's a gateway adding router would essentially be adding a router to a router. It can be done but serves no purpose and will make things worse. The gateway needs be bridged so it strictly acts as a modem, then your router needs to be attached.
