It got a bit better today once I put some time into putting on better gear and using better weapons
Oh that was you in the video?
You need to check your difficulty settings if you're getting 1 shot.
when you get your own settlement you can start stashing seemingly endless loads. you can also look online to find other common places to store items.
but be warned that in 99% storage units you don't own, you stuff will disappear. thats why i say google.
also need to start the game with a decent spread in your Skills/ s.p.e.c.i.a.l.
Like Decent STR/ END/ INT/ CHR
-----Lower AGI/ PER/ LUCK
def get your PER up to a decent level before adding more to the rest

You can get a look of all the perks online or right away in the game iirc, you should def focus on some basics since you're new.
Computer Hacking
Lock Picking
Small guns before Medium/ automatic guns
Weapon Smith or which ever perk upgrades your ability to repair/ mod weapons.
you may need to invest early in a perk here and there if you wish in Carry Weight/ survivalist Perks.. but that's up to you.

Repairing items is important in this game, as the DMG/ DEF reduces as the durability reduces.
you want to save similar gun to what you're using and use them to repair with/ mats eventually.
Anything below a 70% durability starts to suck.
