That's because people have a hard on for D2 but it's very true.
I am not saying it was a bad game by any means or D3 is good or better, I am saying what most people remember liking about D2 was added.
For a quick search of what was added.
From what I remember also,
- Ladder reset
- You couldn't hold a connection to save your life
- The amazon was virtually broken
The ladder itself is basically the reason it lived so long. Yes the reset didn't come with launch but it couldn't. The ladder itself did come with the release. The game was great at the start with no level requirement for uniq, whirlwind had the same speed no matter the weapon. There was no cool down on spells upon release. If anything, the sorceress was the most broken because there was no cool down for orb, meteor or hydra.
I'm not going to pretend like it didn't have connection issues. The game still maintained a form of connection issues as people still get problems with realm down. That will never go away. The great chat channels were implemented at the start.
The stuff you claim that made it great came relatively quickly as the expansion released after only a year and included everything in your list.
D3 is broken beyond repair. The replay value isn't there because there is little to play for. Most everyone played D2 for dueling or ladder climbing. The ladder reset allowed blizzard to maintain that climb over and over again. I could jump on any season and be even with everyone. It was great. They have nothing like that in D3 and the game design itself doesn't even allow for that to be implemented.
