Wow, I know how online passes work. The gaming industry does everything they can to screw over gamers now. Online passes, withholding content to release a week later as DLC, putting content on the disc but making you pay to unlock it, etc. Are you going to tell me that yearly EA sports franchises have such a high development cost that the only way to keep from going under was screwing over the used community?
Here, I'll bold something you guys are dodging: Gaming has always had a "used" community. Ever since the start. Always. The gaming industry has survived this long with a used community. They can continue without it changing that.
They aren't suddenly "losing" money. They're gaining money by taking away something that we've always been given for free. They absolutely LOVE people like you since you'll defend them even if they raise the games to $80. If anything, they've been losing a lot of money from people like me who boycott their shady tactics. I used to buy Madden and NHL every year but NHL 12 was the first game from EA that I've bought since they announced online passes. It makes them look like greedy assholes... it's why Valve and Rockstar are among the most loved devs in the community.
Ok, its not that they are "losing" money, its that they are making less than they would be if people werent buying used. So to make up for it, they charge an extra $10 for people who buy used copies. But all in all, you know what? They can charge $80 for the game, slap on an extra $10 for the online pass, and they will STILL sell them like crazy. People are going to buy it regardless of the price, aside from poor people of course.
You might as well stop complaining, cause online passes arent going anywhere. They are going to be implemented by many more companies soon enough. My best advice is maybe go find a job that pays an extra $10 a year so you can afford an online pass.
