There you go again. You keep thinking the only thing that they can do is go forward, but there are thousands of other options.

Going back? They'res only so much they can do. The First Contact war was short and involved almost no ground conflict. Will they go to before humans? Probably not. Long term, the only way the franchise can go forward is by actually going forward in time.

Not really.

One, sythentic life across the galaxy somehows shutdowns and gets destroyed. This includes all VI, AI, Geth, Reapers, ships, the Citadel, people with large amounts of sythentic parts inside them (Possibly Shepard..), and to top it all off, the Mass Relays.

Two involves you somehow controlling the reapers, beckoning them to leave again. Shepard dies and the Mass Relays are again, gone.

Three involves space vodoo, and all life in the galaxy now transforms into a single type, a "new" DNA where everyone is part organic/part sythentic, like the reapers. Shepard must die, and the Mass Relays are gone too.

All of this started by a space child who is actually the mastermind behind the reapers and also the citadel. Sounds like they couldn't think of any ideas after they were "forced" to change it after the script was leaked. The leaked script was much better.

edit: It'd be REALLY cool if they released a small spin off game or just a large DLC pack where you get to play as the Protheans 50,000 years ago. Just for some more detailed background information, especially regarding the Crucible and it's origins, etc.
