No that's exactly what the division meant. If Sony as a brand fails it can continue on as soley a gaming company. It's the same with Microsoft.
Can, but will not. They are not their own company. They are all part of Sony and MS respectively as a corporation. It just happens to be that one of those corporations is closing its stores and firing 5000 employees worldwide, while still developing $25,000 TVs that no one is going to buy.
