Just picked this game up today. Started playing it beat the first boss then I got taken to that new island by the bird. I'm just a little confused on where I'm supposed to go..

Do I just venture around helplessly or am I suppose to explore the whole island thing..?

you can venture around, it's "open" but closed at the same time.
typically people go up the stairs first.

I have so many questions about this game.. It's really confusing. I can hit well on one monster but then the next one I'll only hit 4 continuously.
I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually.

go up the stairs to a sewer type aquaduct and follow the inside untill you get to a place called the undead burg. there'll be a rat on the left right when you get inside the aquaduct so you'll know its the right way. after the undead burg the game is a little more linear for awhile. when you get to the black smith be sure to buy the repair and upgrade kits, he's in a place called the undead parish after a mini boss boar.

as far as combat. be patient and use your shield. try to get a 100% physical defense shield as soon as you can so you can study the enemies with your shield up and not end up dying.

witcher 2 is much better and requires more skill
