If you are just starting Human Japanese is a good app to learn the basics.
Also learning Hiragana and Katakana early helps too, it did for me.
Kanji For Fun! is a game type app I am using to learn Kanji and it has them grouped by Japanese grade level. It is a matching game, but you can also read about each one for the on and kun readings, etc.
I also use Rosetta Stone. At first it was kind of overwhelming but I found out once I learned some basics from living in Japan and learning how to read Hiragana and Katakana, then Rosetta Stone became a lot more educational for me. It is also good for learning kanji.
I have a couple books too I read off and on. One is your first 250 Kanji, or something like that, and the other is just a basics book. Also have a couple small kanji books, and a Japanese-English Vice versa dictionary.
