so i have a presentation to prepare for and i want to implement a phone conversation in it
1) when you pick up the phone do you say moshi moshi and then the other person replies moshi moshi?

a 2-3 liner example would be a big help

person a: moshi moshi
person b: _________
person a:

more help beyond three lines would be appreciated i'm not so good at conversational writing =(

This could be a phone conversation between two friends. So they are speaking neutrally. Not polite or rude.

Tanaka calls Sayoko:

S: Hai, Sayoko desu
T: Sayoko-san, tanaka desu. Konnichiwa
S: Aa, tanaka-san, konnichiwa
T: Watashi ashite kazoku to duraibu ni ikimasu. Moshi hima ga attara, isshoni ikimasen ka?
S: Soo desu ka? Doko he iku tsumori desu ka?

and so on.

/and in japan I'm pretty sure no1 will answer: "moshi moshi".. unless the answerer knows for sure that the one calling is someone close to her/him.
Since it would be rather rude to answer "moshi moshi" if it's some unknown person.

Grey you couldn't have said that any better :P

Moshi Moshi is only really used for close members.

Got a question about a sentence here :D

Watashi ashite kazoku to duraibu ni ikimasu.
Shouldn't it be he instead of ni ?

I don't get it. WHY IS JAPANESE SO DAMN COMPLICATED ?! :p
