i was in kyoto a few months ago
best thing to do is to hire a tour guide for a few hours to take you around - there are english speaking ones for about 100 dollars US
then find "the philosopher's path" and walk along it on one of the back sides of town its a path along a little creek made of stone with tons of temples along it
for a great day trip from kyoto take the train to Nara, the old old capital, and see the largest wooden building in the world and feed the deer
then go back to tokyo and get massageeee in rapungi
