I'm Japanese and I'll tell you a way to learn for free. Just go to a library and check out some books. I know a few people who live in Japan that have taught themselves Japanese that way. It's not that hard if you are committed to learning the language.

i got a high school book from a friend that even my other friends who can understand/write japanese say its a really good book. i dont know if you can get it but its called.

Adventures in Japanese by Hiromi Peterson & Naomi Omizo, im on book 1, and i have the 2nd one also, not sure how many there are though...

teaches you alot, im still learning to write Hiragana..

An Introduction to Modern Japanese is a good text book to start out with if you are going to go the text book way.

There's some free podcasts how to learn some japanese, but i dont think only listening to that will be enough to "master" it =P
