This is my experience as well.
It's hard to tell because the bar moves very fast in Insane/Nightmare with all the mobs dying at the same time
The only thing you can quantify is the POINTS which you see a clear amount in the lower right corner.
More points = more exp, but 1 Point does not equal 1 EXP, and I don't think anyone knows the actual formula.

Now that hardcore is available in every difficulty level you could test this on Easy mode where the mobs come out 1 by 1.
