My friend of 20 years was shot and killed today. Not many details released yet, but he has been depressed and mentally unstable for a long time. "Police-action shooting" is the verdict so far. What I have been told is that he was suicidal, had a handgun, and the police approached him. He turned and ran, "a shot was fired" and then he was killed by the police. To my knowledge, he shot himself and hit his own shoulder, then the police officer, surely in a panic, shot him in the back.
