Looking for a little something to do with my off time (too busy lately for my usual online games) so I decided to do a walk of one of the original Red/Blue titles. I did a regular walk of Yellow not too long ago (only rule was no legendary/kill all legendary) and successfully completed that:

This time I wanted a little more of a challenge so a friend and I came up with a ruleset and then devised a draft. We coin flipped for first pick of starters (I won the toss). First pick was mine, next 2 were his, then normal back and forth pick. We will both be playing Red, with the following ruleset:

  • Only drafted Pokémon can be used vs Elite Four
  • Win all Rival/Gym/Elite Four battles
  • 1 starter, 1 Eevee required in draft
  • Legendary ban (Kill all)
  • Importing ban
  • 1 life (Feint = release)

My Draft:
Charmander, Kadabra, Dugtrio, Electabuzz, Raichu, Vaporeon

His Draft:
Squirtle, Jolteon, Starmie, Arcanine, Snorlax, Haunter

First rival battle successful. Lucky with crits on Scratch so I didn't need to use the withrawed potion.

Current Party: Charmander (6)

Went north to Viridian Forest to find a Pikachu before the second rival battle. Very lucky to not K.O. this one (5% encounter rate, took quite a while to spawn).

Trained the Pikachu to 9, made the second rival battle much easier than it could've been.

Current Party: Charmander (10), Pikachu (9)

Was actually pretty concerned with this gym while drafting (and the next even moreso) as Red/Blue are extremely limited to options against Brock (Yellow has Low Lick @ 12 for both Nidoran and early access to Mankey). I considered picking up Caterpie in the Forest and switching it out to 10 for Butterfree (which learns Confusion @ 12) but I eventually settled on just farming Charmander to 15 before the gym. I evolved from Brock's gym trainer and the stat increase was enough to carry me through Brock (just Growl if he Bides, spam Ember and potion if needed).

Current Party: Charmeleon (16), Pikachu (12)

Mt. Moon went fairly smooth, playing cautiously with many trips back out to heal. The avoidable rocket slightly before the fossil is probably best to avoid, it has Hyper Fang. I killed it with Charmeleon but could be risky for this type of ruleset. Pikachu/Charmeleon easily handled the third rival battle (forgot to screenshot) and all of Nugget Bridge which opened up the side patch, where you can first encounter Abra. I picked up an Ekans thinking I could Wrap spam Abra to stop Teleport but it was actually too slow so I ended up just leading with Pikachu and Thunderwave until I got lucky with a level 10 spawn. I swapped it in the same grass patch 10-14 then used 2x Rare Candy (1 from Mt. Moon, 1 hidden in Cerulean City) for the evolution. Literally went on to one shot something like 11/12 Pokémon on the strip towards Bill's house with Confusion lmao.

Misty was actually a lot easier than I thought it could potentially be (Starmie is fucking scary). Pikachu handled the two trainers and Staryu, then I swapped to Kadabra (special being one consolidated stat makes him fairly safe against Bubblebeam) to finish it off.

E: No RIPs so far but Pikachu has been tested twice from crits (crit Quick Attack to 2 HP and crit Tackle to 8).

Current Party:
Charmeleon (23), Pikachu (22), Kadabra (20)

Still playing cautiously. Teleport can save you a LOT of time pre fly if you remember to always set your last used center. Reached Vermilion and went grab a Diglett. I forgot to list Ekans/Oddish in my party but I ended up having to sac the Ekans. His only really use for me was assisting with catching lower level spawns anyway. First RIP :/

Don't think I've skipped a single trainer battle so far. Going to need all the levels I can get for the end. Both the cruise ship and Lt. Surge were a breeze. Outside of slip ups I should be golden until maybe Silph Co or Sabrina.

Current Party:
Charmeleon (27), Kadabra (27), Dugtrio (26), Pikachu (26), Oddish (Cut), Voltorb (Flash)
