the menu!

it's the first thing you need to learn when you start working as a server in a restaurant. the more you know the menu the better you can explain the food and drinks to your guests. (if you know what you're selling then you have a better chance at recommending different food and drinks at your tables)
when you get hired at a restaurant or even when you are applying at different restaurants it's a good idea to take home a to-go menu so you can get a head start at learning the items on each restaurant's menu. (key tip: if you're looking for a server job then go for the ones with higher priced menu items because the higher the check, the better the tip!

)
the best way to really know what your selling is by tasting it! eat that food and taste those drinks!
be ready when a guest at your table asks you, "what's your favorite thing on the menu?

"
you need to have an answer for them, sound convincing and explain to them what all is involved in that dish or drink. i like to feel out the guests as i'm taking their order and if they're not looking to spend a lot of money then i recommend cheap but tasty items but if they seem like big ballers i recommend top of the line items like porterhouses and fillet mignons with steak toppers for example. it's all about making your guests happy and helping them to have a great experience!
this is part of my breakdown from post #7
i'll get into pace keeping, consolidation, confidence and more teamwork soon.

i really like your snowman avatar Ryan! :)
also i totally agree with you about being in sync and the best way to get in sync with your fellow co-workers when working in a restaurant (or really any work environment) is communication!
when i got to work tonight it started off really slow. everyone was kind of hanging around and relaxing but i knew we were going to be super busy so i just kept keeping myself busy (while we were slow) doing work related stuff so i would be ready for the massive rush. just me and a few other strong servers keeping up the pace were able to lead the strong rush all the way through til the end of the rush by helping out the new people and getting them involved with communication!
i think i just knocked out pace keeping actually.
pace keeping: keep yourself busy and don't goof off so you are ready for a bunch of tables to be sat and communicate with everyone throughout the slow times all the way through the busy times until the doors lock!
