There have been many instances where my inventory is full when a good item drops, where it poofs before I even have time to make space for it, even if I hit it and the green x is on it.

This has happened to both maps and items in single player. Any info on this?

items will stay until you hit engage. other than that there is no way to extend timers

They have disappeared from the time I tapped them and opened my inv screen. I know better not to engage.

Just like the last person who posted about this, screen record it so we can see it happening. Something you're doing is triggering the items to leave the item box. Unless 2 of you are having the same exact error that no one else is having.

I actually hold EES (Extra Equipment Slot) items in the first 3 slots (at the top) of my inventory screen, if I am full (excluding the +EES), I CTRL+click the EES item and then click on the items I am interested in. This method gives me more slots, and then I can go to town, transfer any items to mule(s) or shrine junkers, or Sell junkers for Skillers.

Oh, as for a Map drop, they will NOT stay there, they will disappear even if you do not press Engage, also, you should ensure you Item Slot section has room for you to click on the Map to check out if monster(s) spawn on the last square.

Hope this helps, people don't like carrying EES gear, but it does help once you get used to it.

Items remain lootable until 5 seconds after the timer is triggered.
The timer can be triggered by the following:

1) "Engaging" by pressing button, hiting "g" key, or a player entering the cata from town.
2) The spawning of a new wave of mobs. Either from whistling or any swarm mechanic such as a new wave of "Hack the Horde"

The only real issue with items disappearing is the maps given from completing a maze have their timers triggered by the mobs that can also spawn on same square.
You can't read them before they poof. So you have to room in inventory and blindly grab them.
