Just started playing last night, picked a Fighter and so far I'm level 28 using only items I've found myself.

Looking for advice, as my items aren't keeping up with the level of the monsters I'm facing (or so it seems). I'm having to go heal after every 5 or 6 battles.

Not sure how I go about linking my character.

Any advice (besides just "buy fg and purchase upgrades") would be appreciated.

Thanks!

#1: make more characters on SC as Mules... you only have your main character.
#2: transfer your best items to the mules using the Market Place and Transfer tab.
#3: ACC charm slot... the only MOD that is active is "Enhanced Effect", so then a heal charm is more effective.

There are more, and hopefully others will post them... Welcome to LS, good luck and have fun

How does crafting work in this game?

I read through a handful of guides, but most don't mention well / transmuting, or crafting in general.

Or is it not something one can usually do as a brand new player?

Crafting in most games is referred to as item crafting. In this game, that's transmuting. Transmuting requires you to use a piece of equipment (weapon/armor/charm) to "transmute it" into an essence. You can than use said essence to transmute another piece of equipment which will re-roll the stats. There are levels to this. For instance, you will start by transmuting tier 1 items with low modifiers (magical/rare/mystical) the higher the modifier the harder the transmute becomes. You then gain experience/levels. Each level gained, the higher level equipment you can transmute. There is a caveat, say you buy a lvl 55 essence and mute it with a 55 weapon, that will work with no levels of muting. The point of leveling transmuting is so you can "destroy" and item into an essence rather than buying it from someone else. There are more in depth guides, but this is the basics.

do not start with transmuting. welling is basically "rolling white gear" with no stats. throw a white item in the well and kill the monster that spawns. generally good items will make the monster harder to kill

As FloppyWaffles stated, a Well can be found in a Catacomb (also referred to a Maze, BUT...) or by using a Map that has +X Well (also a maze, but is a Map, and NOT a general Catacomb)... also, a map has a Monster level cap, BUT, it does NOT affect the Monster level spawned from the White item level you throw into the well.

Basic example:

#1 You are level 55 and want o "Well" level 45 (Tier XII) higher items.
#2 You use a Tier I map with +2 Well (Monster level cap = 15) to ensure you GET a Well in that Maze (also small map size so very fast to find them)
#3 You drop a level 45 (Tier XII) white item into the well, the MONSTER LEVEL will be higher and the drops will equate to the Quality / level... Note; some items will be lower level (Tier), but the main will be on par etc... just test it out... at this level, 55, and item being 45, you have a chance to get side drops level 55.

When welling, there is a +2 Tier cap of side drops as well... e.g. level 5 item dropped into well can get a side drop of either level 10 or 15.

Yes... the well is not just for fishing. You can normally fish while in town at the river/pool/pond (forgot the name of it.)
