's holiday prof hunt gave me the idea to track some of the top players over the course of a week, and see how and when they're playing.
So, I got a list of several of the top players, and set up my server to grab their character's XML page every 30 minutes for a week. These pages update every 10-15 minutes, and have pretty much every character stat. The ones I focused on were Kills, Skills (fishing + cooking + glyphing + muting + suff), and the "Last Action", which is just the timestamp for the last time the game recorded an action for that character. Once I had a week's worth of activity, I compared each 30 minute interval to the one prior, and classified it as one of the following:
Killing - If the character had more kills than the previous interval, they were
killingSkilling - If the character had more combined skill proficiency points than the previous interval, they were
skillingBoth - If the character had more kills and more proficiency points than the previous interval, they were
doing bothChilling - If the character did not increase their kills or skills, but their "Last Action" timestamp changed from the previous interval, then they were
chilling. It's worth mentioning that I don't know for certain what action(s) do or do not change this stat on the XML pages, but I imagine in most cases it would be buying/selling an item, skilling at a low enough level so as to not gain proficiency, or perhaps just chatting.
If all stats are the same, then I consider them
inactive. However, just because someone was active during an interval, does not mean they were active for the entire 30 minutes. (In theory it would be possible to play for 1 minute, stop for 58, then play for another minute, and show up here as playing for 1 hour).
Stats were tracked roughly starting at Midnight GMT on Dec 20th, and ran for a week. It's still running, so I do have some additional days that aren't included in this. (I'm also happy to share the data if anyone's interested, just lmk)
Anyway, without further ado, here is How & When the Top Slashers Play (apologies for the low quality image)
