I seem to have acquired a few maps from clearing low level catacombs.

What do they do, and what/when should I use them?

when in town start one with dragging the map onto your avatar or drag into the use folder, test it out!

If on PC, I just CTRL+click on the map I want to USE while in town... thus, no need to drag-n-drop or use the "Use" feature.

Just remember when doing a map, they have Monster level caps... i.e. Tier I (Patched) = maximum monster level is 15, so if your character is level 20 you lose "Drops n Quality" because you are higher level.

Each map Tier (level) goes up by 5 from "Patched" (Tier I) map, but the size of the maze is that of the level of that map.

New here too, just wanted to ask while on the topic of maps if it's better to do the maps or just keep clearing catacombs?

Depends on what mods are on the Map and if you are not clearing them (Maps) above their Monster level cap (note: Catacomb mobs adjust their level based on your character level and does NOT have a level cap).

Also, a +X Well map can fetch you forum gold. Other mods on maps like +X Evil Presence &/or Treasure Chests help in either selling or exploring.

I read aswell that it's best to explore cata up to level 10 then whistle 10-20, is that correct?

You definitely want to start out exploring the maze at lvl 1 so you can get the explore the maze quest which grants you 1-2 extra equipment slots, which is a must on any character imo. Whistling is really a preference thing though. Some people like to climb faster, therefor they whistle from 1-mq, however if you do so, you will be missing out on any eps or objective quests. Whistling can also be used to control the levels of monsters and can be used for a newer player with starting gear to climb solo to mq. 3 eps at lvl 6x+ might be hard or near impossible for one to grind out using self found gear.
