I started a map at 51 on one character and am hoping to swap to a new level one character to finish it. I'm going to be hitting 71 on my mage before its done. Should I just finish it on my mage?

"should" be just based on the character level which started it. Otherwise we'd have loads of level 55 maps from where people do group MQ's then complete the map a level 1 at the end of the run.
This isn't the case, just get level 1 map drops.

I'm not 100% sure about vice versa though, would expect it to work seeing it's still an enormous map to check (should still be a level 51 map drop, which would allow level 55 maps). So this possibly isn't too helpful of a post but no-one else is posting, so all i have is "i think that's how it works" :P
If you decide to switch to level 1, let me know how it works out.

Just to clarify, you're not actually using a map? just using catacombs and checking what map drop could drop.

i have tried exploring lvl 1 cata with my warlock at 81 before. and allways get t1 to t3

so it may be tied to the size of map :D

To clarify, you've explored a very large map from a level 50+ char and finished it with a low level char?
We already know the reverse (checking a small map from a level 1 char, with a level 50+ char results in level 1 map)

my thoughts also, but it's not guarenteed as it would be weird for a level 1 to find a level 55 map.

So open a large map with a high level char then explore it with low level until the last step then finish high level again.

I'm unconvinced this works.

For another example, if you get a few steps away from finishing a map and 4 people join you, you do not get 5 map drops.
It certainly checks for how many players have been in the map, unsure how much it tracks level, but i suspect it does this to some extent also.

Guess I'll just finish it on easy mode.
