What do they do besides dropping you into a new catacomb?

increase the level of monsters you fight from 1-5 levels I believe?

Doubt it, cuz nmnm wont be active then and very likely he wants to farm it !
If the td is spotted (rogue,monk,ninja) then before hitting the td he would love to have it maybe... if hes not hard into his own cata.

Logging out is not the only way to reset your maze. Simply create and leave a group. This way you don’t lose the glyphs you may have active.
