It's been ages but I'd like to give it another go.
The game seems to have changed greatly and I feel lost.
I have small capital to invest in items - which class should I choose and what kind of items would be the best investment to start my adventure?
I'd appreciate any advice :)

Any preference when it comes to daggers or axes or should I be only concerned about their market price?
Which melee class should I choose?

I think by limited capital he means he has 160 fg.

Swords can get you through the first 3 classes and are generally reasonably priced. Dagger/axe is by far the preferred and efficient way - but can be cost prohibitive.

Swords and staffs can get you to head hunter.

Go for barb or fighter.
Use swords.

If you go Daggers they work for for feeder, and Sammy. Then you need new gear for paladin.

If you go axes they work for feeder and paladin, but would need new gear for Sammy (before paladin)

If you go swords they work for feeder, Sammy, and paladin.

For solo go barbarian or fighter and use both abilities retribution and powerstrike. Those 2 will help you get through the higher levels.

How do I know if the item price is accurate and I don't overpay for it?
I've chosen to climb with Barb - should I add my stats into Strength?
Any other tips as to the gameplay itself? Shortcuts, best way to play solo, abilities?

A lot of questions but I'm lost :)

Soft core do 80 vita
Hardcore do 100 vita

Rest to strength

Retribution
Power-strike
Knockdown

ENhanced effect (ee) on weapons
Ee on armors - scales > leather > chains > plates > padded > robe
Strength on charm

Look to upgrade your gear every chance you can; but don’t worry if you have 10-15 level gaps in gear

Monsters are harder than they were before. You have to go to a higher level. You assume that someone starting out doesn't have very good gear so they will obviously need more vitality or they won't even be able to charge their abilities.
