There isn't even a minimum distance between wells. I've had 2 wells stuck together before:

found 7 + wells in one map 2 years ago, cannot remember exactly but it was very comfortable :)

I once found 3 wells in like 0.5 seconds speeding along a line hitting 3 wells in 4 steps. :lol:
Else my max was 6 wells or so

There's no limit as far as I know, but I think our record was 12 wells in a map
